According yet apart”. This assignment is intended

According to S. Los,
Carlo Scarpa, Koln, Taschen (2002, p. 74), “There is a dialogue between
different materials from different historical eras, placed closely together yet
apart”.

            This
assignment is intended to describe how an old heritage building should be
remodelled and reused in our contemporary condition to preserve the regional
architecture style, history and form of the local culture. An approach that
promotes a sympathetic and symbiotic relationship between new and old, in other
words, a juxtaposition can be created between the old heritage building and the
new additional designs with contemporary materials could tell stories from
different historical eras by themselves. Preserving the old heritage building
could reflect the past purposes and story of the building to the users while
experiencing the newly added design and forms. In order to respond to
remodelling, it is essential to consider the environmental, contextual,
structural and aesthetic of reusing the existing old building. This process can
be broken down into a few number of stages which are; analysing the existing
building, developing a strategy for the design, and provide the tactics to
remodel the building using new materials and forms.

1.   Introduction:

The introduction explains the evolution of a building,
but their reuse emphasises continuity. An old heritage building can tell
stories of its former purpose, function and value. It has a memory of its architecture
history within its very structure. Louis Kahn once asked:” What does it want to
be?”, and this assignment shows the unique answer that is hidden within the
profundity of the heritage building by proposing an analysis regarding the
relationship between the existing building and the new materials and forms of
remodelling.

2.   Analysis

The
analysis describes the old building that provides the concept and theory of adapting
and reusing the space, to produce strategies and tactics of new design and
forms. The successful of creating a juxtaposition between the old and the new
depends on the knowledge and understanding of the existing building and what is
expected to alter, it has a huge influence on the final design, form and usage
of contemporary materials.

3.   Strategy

The
strategy is a controlling device that drive the design of the building, it can
be generated through by combining various of different factors such as site
constraints, existing building conditions, program requirements, structural
bearings and systems. Developing a strategy that bridges the existing building
and newly added design and forms is crucial especially when an old building is
being adapted and reused because the new could not exist without the exiting
building.

4.   Tactics

The tactics explains the employment of the
strategy that adapts and reuse the existing building by designing new elements
and forms to express the character of the building. These new elements and
forms give the building its character and provide the building a unique feature
and it is these tactics that gives the remodelled buildings its individual
style and nature. Then, the whole building can be read like a book that tells
story by reading the building details of preservation of old heritage building
and newly designed forms using contemporary materials.
